I just cancelled my daughter’s membership and upgraded mine to a Black Card and it took about 5 minutes. Very simple!
I agree with James. In person is usually easier and suggest calling ahead to be sure any required staff members will be present for your visit. I believe it needs a manager approval, but at other locations it was pleasingly simple to end.
You have to physically go in to that location, or you send that location a letter with all your account information, specify if you shouldn't have a cancellation fee, and send it via certified mail. I also asked for confirmation when they receive the request, which thankfully they fulfilled.
