Hi Judy. Yes you can. I submit designs to the county for these frequently. State legislation effective January 1, 2017 now makes it possible to add an attached or detached 2nd unit or legally referred to as ADU (accessory dwelling unit). If you talk to a planner, they will explain that you can, and also what the limitations are. Then they will tell you to draw up the plans or find someone like me to design and get all the plans approved.
