If you try to make an appointment it will be at least 3 to 4 weeks out....Personally I have found the best way to do dmv is to get there about 3 pm, they will still be handing out #s. Go a little earlier if you want to make sure but I have always gotten a # if I was there by 3. They will send you a link that helps track your spot in line so that you can go sit on your car etc. It is very helpful and if you happen to totally miss your # being called they are good about getting you in ( I lost my sticker that you get for health clearance). If you get there in the morning you will be waiting longer for nothing.
You can, but it can take well over a month or two to get an appointment. I recently waited in line with someone to take the permit test, and it took about 3 hours to get in the door, and about 30 minutes to finish the test.
