It can get busy busy near the playground structures by the duck pond on the La Cienega side. You're supposed to reserve barbecue/picnic areas through the park staff or website, but I know people who just went there in the morning and put signs up at a picnic location and that worked fine. If you want the barbecue spot at the top of the hill near the playground with the people dragon, you must reserve it ahead. That space is always booked in advance and you will be kicked out by the people who reserved it.
