Yes, you can. I had to renew in person and they provided a temporary paper license at the time. I'd think there would be something similar you could print out from the online renewal. Worst case scenario, print out the confirmation that you submitted your renewal. Also, carry your expired license as well. FWIW, my license arrived in the mail pretty quickly...less than two weeks.
