The DMV does not allow AAA to accept cards. The DMV would have to purchase terminals for all AAA's. Even the DMV branches do not accept credit cards, only debit. If you want to pay by credit card you can use the DMV website or their kiosks. Blame the DMV not AAA.
Cash or check only pertains to DMV transactions, at AAA. You may use your card for other transactions, there however. I have purchased and renewed memberships with my card, but only used cash or check for DMV transactions. I had a similar experience with DMV, years ago, but they have moved to card transactions, now-at least for licenses and ID's.
