Shelters get animals in, and adopt out, all the time. It's best for you to search at https://www.sdhumane.org/adopt/available-pets/ to see what animals are currently available. You can search by type of animal, gender, shelter location and other criteria. If you see an animal you like, you can call before going to the shelter to make sure the animal is still available.
They usually say just browse the website. Scope it out there and then call to make sure they're available. Then adopt.
