Can anybody comment on the forest service road conditions? 4x4 necessary? Can a Subaru impreza make it or do I need to bring the truck?

You could get there in a car easily. Pavement up to the lake and maybe a half mile of well maintained gravel road

We took our Honda Civic in. Maybe be aware of potholes but you can always skirt around them easily.
