Great Question! At JSE, we are accredited to test for asbestos in bulk building materials. We don't test for asbestos in water but there are labs that have the TEM (transmission electron microscope) to do so. A test runs between $200 to $250. A typical turnaround time for a result is 5 to 10 business days. The lab requires 1 liter of water that they must receive within 48 hours of collection. If not received in that window from draw to delivery, then the lab must ozonate the sample which costs another $50. The water can either be first draw, which is right when you turn on the faucet, or have been running through the pipe for awhile. Either way is fine. The EPA's maximum contaminant level (MCL) is 7 million fibers per liter (MFL). This only includes fibers that are greater than 10 micrometers in length.
