There *are* rentals and they are seasonal...so No camping gear in the winter and no snow shoe rental in summer. bags and pads are no longer rented in California due to bedbug legislation that was enacted a few years ago.
They do rent camp gear, but not bags
Rei does not offer rentals, however they have a large selection of camping and outdoor gear. They also offer classes, and organized outings. There are a few sales a year, including the labor day sale which is going on right now. You can find a sleeping bag now for 40% off.
