My cat is so sick with arthritis she can hardly lift her head . when she needs to potty I have to carry her , and it is a horrible mess .She was prescribed Gabapentin , which doesn't seem to be working and she hates it .

Please discuss this with your vet, and make the best decision for your pet, not what is best for you. I regret keeping my favorite dog alive too long while she was suffering miserably. It is very hard.
