Hello Nellie, We recommend a slow release all purpose organic fertilizer. As for trimming, you can cut any wild hairs to regain balance, but no major trimming is necessary. Hope that helps, -PAN
From my understanding of Japanese maples they really enjoy being trimmed. However you would want to do it soon as they don't like being trimmed while in their prime growing season. For a fertilizer I would go with a 4-8-5 fertilizer or as close to that as possible. There are brands that specifically make Japanese maple fertilizer.
