The original design was by Prentice & Virginia Blodel as a Western reinterpretation of a large-scale Japanese garden, with less of a focus on ornament. While technically privately owned (not public land), the property is presently held by a 501(c)3 non-profit whose mission is to provide access to the property to visitors at a minimum cost.
The original owner designed it all for his wife.
