I have never seen any issues with Shantung maples and they are currently listed on the Texas Superstar list for durability. Unfortunately, Treeland does not sell them. I have two and they have excelled in my clay soil with frequent watering.
Shantung maple is an excellent shade tree for small yards and landscapes. Plant a Shantung maple in the spring or fall in full sun or part shade. It will perform well in East Texas' acidic soils if ample drainage is provided. Follow up on my knowledge, all I know is for sure there are October Glory Maples. Not certain if that would be another name for the same one you're asking about but good people in the office maybe we can work something out in getting it for you
Thanks for your question Nancy. Shantungs must have really great drainage, which can lead to issues with the clay soils in our area. That can then lead to root rot. If you have excellent drainage then they will work, if not I would switch to a hardier variety like the October Glory Maple.
