Sons Island is located on a river that is completely natural, uneven and definitely has some deep spots. However, there are very shallow areas and life jackets available. FYI: The water stays relatively cold all year round. Furthermore, Sons island is a blast and super relaxing. Enjoy yourself but be careful!
It seemed to have spots for all types of swimmers. Advanced or not. It is a river though so does have a slimy river bed and dead branches so use caution.
The area I was in was shallow but the rocks were really uneven and you have to be careful when stepping. You can rent a large pad to float on called an Ipad, I know lol, and you can fit quite a few adults and a couple of kids. Sons island is definitely a lot of fun and makes a great memorable trip.
