A USPA A license takes >= 25 jumps. A solo jump can be made via static-line or after 3 tandem-progression jumps. Students make "supervised" jumps until they get an A license, but those are mostly solo. It cost me a couple thousand ($2K) to get an A license. You have to pay for the instructors jump while you are a student. Jumps are $25 once solo, but then there's gear rental fees. Tandem rates are about $200.
I talked to them about the same thing couple weeks ago and there is a lot of information. Your best emailing him set up a time to call and talk about it cuz a lot of it has to do with how well you perform.
