It is not required if they have open sites. However, they are often booked solid if in summer or weekend. There is no dry camping overflow or something of that nature.

I would also recommend reserving. We were there mid march and on the weekend every site was full.
Definitely reserve houses early. Hotel type accommodations you might be able to book 24 hours in advance.
I would suggest one. They have a phone number or just use the website. It will allow you to look at and pick a spot. I would hate to show up and not have a site available. This place gets wicked popular from spring thru summer.
You can always call. We went in late September and they told us they had spots left. We arrived after dark and there were only 3 spots left with electrical hookup. You can drive up to the office and self register.
