Is this campground likely to fill the first week of May? My plans are uncertain and I need some flexibility, but am possibly going to be in that area May 4th, a Friday. Would it be risky to wait and try for a first come first served campsite?

When we went in June it filled up pretty quickly. There were one or two empty sites but not many. It's probably safer to reserve and then cancel if you need to. I think I remember that they offer a 24 or 48 hour cancellation policy.
