Weekdays are easier
Reservations are recommended, especially for weekends. However, I have arrived without a reservation several times and it's only once been an issue. On that occasion the campground was full except for one reserved site which I was allowed to occupy after the reservation failed to show by the cutoff time.
Yes, but it might be pretty cold if you are in a tent.
