Briefly. Was saved in 1850s before clearcutting took place. Is one of largest old growth forests left on east coast. There is a good movie at the park facility that covers the history of the park. Suggest that before doing any hiking there.

At the entrance of the park, they have a small Museum area. They have a theater that shows an hour video talking about the history of the park. Can't remember anything specific at the moment.

Go to the website, www.nps.gov/cong If you go to the park you can pick up an official park brochure and watch the 18 minute video in the Harry Hampton Visitor Center.
