My teenage boys have never skied or snowboarded. If they rent a snowboard and do not like can they return and try skis without paying another rental fee?

Yes they can. There is a beginner lesson included free with their lift ticket, I would highly recommend they take it. Snowboarding is kind of tough that first day unless you have someone showing you how to do it properly.
