The roads are not that bad you just have to wait going over the grade for about 15 or 20 minutes in between crescent City and Klamath... I was just that way this past weekend .... Beautiful drive....
I was heading north and had to stop for an 1-1/2 hours about 12 miles from Crescent City. It was a nice break with a beautiful view of the ocean though.
Not too bad a slide happen on the way between places but not a long wait.. until they clear it up... But it is such beautiful drive!
About an hour delay each way just south of Crescent City.

As mentioned by others, the construction South of crescent City can be quite disrupting. We went through there several times. The signage warns of up to two hour waits. Our worst was probably about 90 minutes, but you might need to double that if you go there and back. Going North, i suggest either going late or making a stop at the beach if you see a line of cars
Get there early or pack a lunch.
