Yep -.5 or better and the earlier in the season the better. Try to be on the clam bed about 45 minutes or more before the tide chart says low tide is. That will give you plenty of time before the tide starts coming in and covering up the areas you can find good clamming in.
Look for a minus tide .5 or less.
