If Cremation and inground is the choice an upright granite headstone is used. If the spouse passes first their information would be considered the front of the market. When the Veteran passed the headstone is redone and spouses info goes on the back and the Veteran info is engraved on the front.
Both of my parents were vets. I put my fathers inurnment on postponement. When our mother passed they both were buried together side by side on the same day. Very moving.
If cremated we were told the spouses info goes on other side of the headstone.
