That is incorrect information, the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetary did not switch to all upright headstones. Our veterans (and their spouses) get to make the choice together. Upright headstones are standard in most national cemeteries, however, some have both upright headstone and flat marker sections and in some cases above ground columbarium niches for cremated remains.
When I went to day for my dad’s funeral this is what I learned about G-3. This spot was first place for in the ground cremation when The cemetery was first built. However they soon learned that it was hard to find Veteran Graves due to Ohio’s snow and ground maintenance and the flat head stones. So, shortly after the spots where filled the cemetery switched to all up rights even for in the ground cremations.
The first answer is mostly correct. G3 was designated as an inground cremation section with flat granite markers. To the best of my knowledge the master plan created before the initial build does not call for additional flat marker sections. Presently there are two options; upright granite or granite niche and it's decided by type of burial.
