Generally ALL ski resorts require you to buy and display lift tickets. The only exceptions are ski clubs, ski patrol, and staff such as instructors. This is true of Pine Knob as well.
The patches are watched on kids that have ski club lift tickets. They do watch for these.

Lift tickets are needed to ride lifts. Ski or snowboard equipment is also needed, because there is no downhill loading. If your a student in the patch program, I patch is needed to prove your skill level is appropriate for the level of terrain. Patches are obtained from lessons at the ski school. No need with all area ticket.
They are trained to assure that all hav paid lift tickets. Children need to have level appropriate badge which they can get assessed by personnel.
