The stores are complete bullshit, trying to steal the success of the local actual farmers markets and use them to get more money for big corporations , and to wipe out small mom-and-pop businesses in the area. Nobody who really cooks, or lives here wants to shop at these places.
The Safeway food markets are famous for their high prices.The Safeway has 3 kinds of stores: the regular Safeway grocery stores,the Pac-and- Save which is supposed to have lower prices,and the Community Markets. I believe that the Community Market is the most elite of the three tiers. Orginally,the Community Markets were a family-owned, rather high-end group of stores. They had special foods not available in other stores.The community Markets still carry some of the special products. You might see some of these marked "Andronico's". There are other special items as well. I do not know what products you shop for,but you might notice ALL food items in any grocery store are expensive. Try Trader Joe's for generally good prices,but clip coupons and look for items on sale. The coupons for Safeway are also usable in Pack- and -Save and the Community Markets.
