You can! We bring entire lunches in and use the tables to eat. You just can't take food into the exhibits like the reptile house or what have you. There is also the option to bring a cooler and eat in grant park at a pavilion.
Yes! We volunteer for the zoo. ZA is very cooler friendly. Bring lunch, beverages, all of it. There are plenty of picnic tables as well.

There is no one checking your bags at the gate so guessing you can. Saw a lot of people getting their own food and no one questioned.
No but ive seen ppl carry packs on them with crackers and water to hold them over till they left .... Or stamp your hand go eat then come back ...
I wish we had taken our own food, as the options for vegans/vegetarians are next to none. It is possible to carry a few snacks.
