Joe Marcotte said it best. Nothing immediately outside the area but a power walk will get you to several places on base. The good news is wherever you go you should feel safe. The base has your back...front and sides.
Define walking distance? I regularly walk to places within 2 miles or so. PX/Commissary/Food Court/Concessions are about 10 minute walk and the Shoppette/Class 6 is closer. The movie theater was about 5 minutes but they closed it. Arbys/other shoppette is a solid 10-15 minute fast walk (a mile or so). BK is 3-5 minutes past the commissary.
You would have to walk a few blocks to get to The Exchange and the commissary. But a walk to the exchange is worth the time it would take you to get there. We live near the Navy submarine base in Groton Connecticut and could not believe how amazing the exchange was at Fort Meade! The commissary is great also, but it might be too far to to carry groceries back to the hotel. It's an absolutely beautiful post the hotel is wonderful and as the person before me stated, I also felt very safe there. My husband was away all day, for classes, but I felt totally comfortable venturing out on my own. They even have a really nice thrift shop but that is quite far from the hotel. One last thing, they give you a nice detailed map showing you where everything is on base so it's easy to find your way around. Best of luck to you.
There is a museum right next to the hotel, and a PT track. The commissary, PX, shopette, and bowling alley are less than a 10 minute walk.
Not really it's on post. The best i could say is the movies. Catch a cab to arundell mills/ casino live for entertainment
