You can only see the castle with the tour, and reservations are recommended. We didn't have reservations and fortunately the tour wasn't full so we were able to join, but I wouldn't want to count on that.
Yes, there is no option of going into the castle by yourself... You can only enter as a part of the official tour - which is definitely worth it...
Definitely do the tour - you can't see nearly as much when not touring.
