The people at AAI were all so helpful! They take excellent care of the animals and are doing a great job of preparing them for life in their forever homes. We are so happy with the little guy we adopted. Cannot suggest them highly enough.

Every review epitomizes the true nature of this organization... even those who may not be happy about not being approved, actually show exactly how committed this place is to ensuring they find FOREVER homes for their animals. I inquired about leashing my potential adoption (cat) and after a full explanation as to why it may not be the best idea ... I was completely fine with their policy and was actually given information I was not aware of. If they changed this for every owners potential situation the likelihood of a returned adoption increases and that's not their goal here. All that being said, my experience personally has continued to be nothing less than positive. I'm absolutely in love with our new furry family member and the care he received with animal aid... it was nothing short of amazing! We adopted a cat from their heartstrings program and I'm just in awe of the care my Bax was given. He wouldn't have stood a chance at the pound and they gave him exactly what he deserved...a chance at a loving and caring life with a match that was perfect for his needs. They will not settle for less and I completely respect that. Thank you again guys for giving me such a joy in my life!

This is a wonderful organization. The animals are well cared for and the adoption process is thorough. The volunteers’ commitment is impressive. I love my new adopted kitty.

I adopted my kitty Jiji from Animal Aid last summer. I was impressed with the care and love they show to the Cats in their care. Animal Aid commits to the animals for live and strives to place them in the best homes. They also have a legion of volunteers to care, pet and play with the animals in the shelter which makes the cats happier and better adjusted for their stay. They are constantly monitoring the well being of the cats and adjusting which rooms they live in. You can come in and get to know the cats who are roaming in various rooms. They check references so don't expect to leave with an animal the moment you meet one. This can be a 20 year commitment and my experience that the process helped finding a wonderful fit for both my Kitty and my family.

Does she like cats and I have to chicken
Thanks for reaching out and for your interest in volunteering, Bri! You can learn more about our shelter volunteer positions here: https://animalaidpdx.org/with-the-animals/. Two that might be of interest to you are caregiving (helping to clean the shelter and care for the cats; must be 16 years or older) or socializing (spending time petting, playing, and grooming the cats, to help them acclimate to the shelter; must be 14 years or older to attend without an adult). Information about the timeframes for each of these volunteer positions is included in the link above. Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any additional questions!
Yes.
If they aren't found on the street as strays, they might. Best to call them first though!
No, they aren't equipped for small animals. It's a free-roaming cat shelter. Check Bonnie L Hays or the Humane Society. You can also ask at Scales and Tails, the exotic pet vet across the road from Animal Aid, as they work with the Portland Guinea Pig Rescue.
You can't just drop him off but they do take pre-arranged owner-surrenders. I would suggest you call and talk to the admins here. They're very nice people who are very understanding and just want what's best for the cat. This is a wonderful place and they'll do everything they can to help a kitty in need.
Is your dog still available? Does he get along with other dogs?
You should ask someone to foster her if you plan on rehoming so she can get to learn other people are fine.
Hi, Pamela: We are donation-based for our adoptions, and only have set fees for puppies and kittens. Otherwise, we ask for a donation of the adopter's choosing at the time of adoption. You can learn more about our adoption process here: https://www.animalaidpdx.org/adoption-policies/. Thank you!
Hello! We don't operate a pet food bank. Some local options include The Pongo Fund and Fido Pet Food Bank.
They are mostly cats, and a few off site others in foster homes check their website for current
Hi, Christine: Thanks for asking! We rescue both cats and dogs. Our cats are housed at our free-roam shelter, while all dogs (as well as some cats) are in foster homes.
Hi, Seychelle: Thanks for reaching out! Yes, cat socializing is available for youth volunteers, though we ask that anyone 14 and under be accompanied by an adult during their shift. You can learn more about becoming a socializer here: https://animalaidpdx.org/with-the-animals/. Thank you!
Animal aid has several cats of various sizes and ages you can drop in Monday - Friday during regular business hours 11am - 4 pm Saturday is also open to potential adoption applicants.
Hi Colleen, the animal aid website has an online form that lists volunteer and foster options and they also respond to emails pretty quickly. You can also call during business hours to speak to someone or leave a message during off hours. There are several different ways volunteers can help and if doing things online is not your thing they can mail you the information or you can drop in during business hours.
