I have always worked in very diverse workplaces having lived all over the world however nothing prepared me for the discrimination at Radar farms. I have a masters in law, a bachelors in psychology and a certificate in social work. I have lived in the Middle East, Europe, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. I have also had extended visits to India and Pakistan having been married to a Gujarati and Pakistani. My grandfather is Mexican and I grew up speaking Spanish surrounded by his living family culture. And yet I was blown away by the clear discrimination of my skin colour being white. I first started a summer job in the lynden factory during the summer harvest as I did not wish my daughter to work alone. It turned into a full time permanent job and I was very quickly promoted to Quality Assurance. The pay was just Not very competitive above minimum wage but being that I really didn’t need to work for financial reason I took the job. It was wonderful getting back into a daily routine and I lived the work. However straight away I was insulted by my young Mexican supervisor who asked where I had gone to school at in a disdainful tone. My next experience with another employee was no better when she told me I should learn Spanish to fit in. At that point I decided to keep my knowledge of the language a secret. Talking behind my back, spreading rumors, calling me derogatory names and blatantly asking when I would get fired. The workplace is predominately Mexican in the day time and mixed with East Indian in the evening. Very few workers outside of 2 wannabe white dudes (who I demoted as their puppet in my mind at least) were any other race. I worked as a minority many times in the past but hearing them asking when I would get fired in Spanish on day three was a turning point for me. Nevertheless I stayed in the job for quite a few months despite a lot of sabotaging on their part. Finally they got one of the drugged out factory workers to lay a false claim at my feet. I had already complained to HR about working conditions and things said behind my back. However since they seemed to always be changing received no help with the situation. She said I made a move on her and asked her to find me a big banana. I was shocked as a Christian with a fiancé and being totally straight. This conveniently happened after I requested and was given time off to go to New Orleans visit my fiancé’s family. We had planned for months and already bought non Refundable tickets and hotel rooms. One week before going I was told that corporate said I had worked less then a year and couldn’t go. I later found out my awkward (white) QA manager was the one to rescind on the initial promise of leave despite having plenty of people to cover for me. I lost over $800 having in order to rearrange my trip. HR refused to help me. However the lies were beyond anything I have ever experienced by professionals. Less then a month later I was fired based on the false allegation above. When I told HR that I felt this was discrimination they said I was no longer a good fit for the company. This is despite my assistant manager saying that I did an excellent job and had great work ethic. It’s a job where management likes to pass the buck so they do not do well with emails or creating paper trails which you will undoubtedly need if you expect any rights. They work their people like slaves giving them little requested time off, long days, and little pay. In fact it wasn’t until Walmart started employing them that they actually cut the hours to 50 hours a week. Many of the employees do not have legal right to work in the USA. They help the employees gain social security numbers through dubious means. However that means they have to work themselves to death with no say on their work hours or being let go. Short unlawful breaks. It is also the reason they can afford to pay so low for the type of work expected of employees. They do have medical care plans that are decent. Awful awful experience with this company.
