Christmas tree 🎄 hunting out here for the first time with the family and I. It is fun easy and inexpensive! $5 for a tree tag and off we went. The tags are sold locally at Bi-Mart or ACE in Pendleton or Hermiston. We ended up with a gorgeous 11ft short needle pine 🌲 Hope you try this just once, you will be impressed.

We stay here all the time, 5 min from highway, sleep then on the road again. Free, beautiful, quiet, vault toilet.

We came Saturday afternoon and there was still 2 sites open. Sites are big and cozy. You have to drive about a mile on gravel road to the campground. There is a small pond down the road. We really enjoyed our stay.

Questions & Answers

Is it free camping there.

Mark Russell | Dec 25, 2018

Yes, the sites are currently free. There is a pit toilet (outhouse) but no running water. The creek nearby usually runs dry in the summer. I would not be surprised if the sites become fee-based soon, however, as the federal agencies are under serious budgetary shortfalls and there are some services there. It's a nice campsite just off the freeway. The gravel into the campground is not very good so watch your tires.

Could I drive on the forest service road in a low-clearance sedan to get to the campground? Or would I need a high-clearance vehicle?

You will have no problem getting to the campground. It's a bumpy dirt road, but it's not that bad.
