Its a long, slow drive, and some of the road is sketchy, but paved. Don't get fooled thinking it's fine because it's paved. The hike up to the top of the ridge is pretty steep, but there are steps. There's also a small outdoor seating area to look around, or listen to Interpretive programs on weekends. From the top, you can see all the neighboring volcanos. Sometimes elk are around up there. Observe them from a good distance. They could spook and hurt you. Access to several hiking trails from the parking area. Currently the road to the hiking areas is closed (7-26-22)

Great views of Mt St Helens from Windy Ridge. There are some interesting spots and trails on this side of the mountain, including access to the pumice plains, and a burned out vehicle from 1980. The downside is the road to Windy Ridge and out to Randle or Cougar is in poor shape, paved, but in need of serious repair in sections. I was told funding was cut substantially. There are also zero services on this side of the mountain, no snacks or food, or anything else other than an outhouse. If you go, bring supplies. There is weak cell service from Windy Ridge.

2021.09.17: Blustery day with change in weather and temperature didn't provide for much visibility of Mount St. Helens from Windy Ridge, but air was crisp and fresh. According to official signage Harmony represents the only allowable access (on foot) to the Spirit Lake banks, although I wasn't adequately dressed to brave against the chill for a walk down to lakeside. Currently no facilities inside the park are open; take in and haul out, carry your own water and rations. Closest community is Randall to the north.

The day was overcast but we were glad we went. This was our first time time to Windy Ridge. We had visited Johnston Ridge many years ago but this trip gave a much different perspective. The road from Randle is OK paved but rough in spots from frost heaves. GPS may mislead you but follow directions from Forest Service web site. Well worth the drive. Volunteers from Mt St Helen's Institute were at Windy Ridge and provided great insight.
