Google New York State DMV reservations. And click the first link, and go from there.I don't recommend going here though. They are very rude and miserable.

Can I walk in without an appointment? Or do I have to make one in advance?

At entrance they asked me to show on my phone that I had an appointment. I was scheduled for learner permit test. You go to their website, choose make reservation, choose location and choose the reason of your visit and select date. Here the official link https://nysdmvqw.us.qmatic.cloud/naoa/index.jsp
