Trying to call to find out why my mail isn't being delivered, and the phone system is already shut down 15 minutes before they close. No wonder UPS and FedEx are more popular; at least you can contact them with issues.

Completely useless (though this is to be expected of most "businesses" staffed by federal employees). They never answer their phones and only give boilerplate answers to inquiries even when you explain your situation. When I explained that no one even attempted to deliver the package up a flight of stairs, the manager dismissed this as simply not possible. I checked my mailbox, no slip. Check again 30 minutes later, driver left a slip. They NEVER knocked on my door. I was sitting 10 ft from my front door and couldn't possibly have missed a knock in those 30 minutes. Simply put, there is a reason this public business loses billions every year. They're lazy.

6:10 AM - "Out for delivery." 8:38 AM - "Held at Post Office, At Customer Request." Our USPS driver doesn't deliver our mail until 10:30-11:00 everyday. Who requested that it be held at the post office? I tried calling but the number doesn't go anywhere other than a dial up connection sound and then being hung up on. This was Thursday that they "attempted delivery," it is now Monday. No one left a slip in the mailbox telling me where my package was. If I hadn't looked it up online, I wouldn't have realized that it was at the post office for me to pick up. Is it a general ineptitude or sheer laziness on the part of the United States Postal Service? Fix your phone system. Update: It was delivered the same day I wrote this. Still doesn't explain why the default is to say that it was held at the post office due to customer request.

they don't answer their phone and my carrier often misses pickups and doesn't even stop at my mailbox with the flag up if I am not receiving mail that day.

Amazon now has thier own delivery people , and , as a letter carrier , i have seen many of their misdeliveries , if the pkg. Doesn't say Usps , its probably them.
You have to go to the post office directly and explain the situation
I would go back. Learned of Walmart employee s . Can get your money if you don't pay attention to when they ask if you want cash back you say no some are taking that as open door n collect on you.
If you lose your tracking number, there's unfortunately not terribly much that can be done. The best thing you can do on your end is if you know the person on the other end if they have that information. In the future, if you sign up for Informed Delivery, the USPS will send you emails that can include images of packages you sent and could be receiving.
