Questions & Answers

What are retainers and how do they work?

Omar Orthodontics | Nov 5, 2019
Omar Orthodontics | Nov 5, 2019

Retainers are a removable device that keep the teeth aligned even after your braces come off. Teeth can easily shift out of place, so it’s important to wear retainers to keep them straight. For the first few months, the orthodontist will most likely recommend wearing retainers full time except when eating or brushing. After that, they’ll only need to be worn at night.

At East Gate Orthodontics, your braces can be as unique as your smile. Our office offers many options for orthodontic treatment including: traditional, lingual, self-ligating, and clear/ceramic braces. We also have clear aligners such as Invisalign® and ClearCorrect™.

Should I get Invisalign®?

Omar Orthodontics | Nov 5, 2019
Omar Orthodontics | Nov 5, 2019

Invisalign® is a popular type of clear aligner that many patients prefer to traditional braces because it is convenient and virtually invisible (hence the name). The aligners are completely removable, so they can be taken out for eating, brushing, sports, etc. This treatment is effective for mild to moderately misaligned teeth, but it may not be as useful for severe malocclusions. Our orthodontist can help determine whether Invisalign® is a good for you.

What’s the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?

Omar Orthodontics | Nov 5, 2019
Omar Orthodontics | Nov 5, 2019

All orthodontists are dentists, but not all dentists are orthodontists. Dentists practice general dentistry, like conducting dental exams, cleanings, fillings, etc. To become an orthodontist, dentists must enroll in an additional 2 - 3 year specialty program dedicated to orthodontics. Orthodontists are trained in dentofacial orthopedics and how to move teeth properly.

Can adults get braces?

Omar Orthodontics | Nov 5, 2019
Omar Orthodontics | Nov 5, 2019

It’s never too late to get orthodontic treatment. Braces aren’t just for adolescents. Many of our patients at East Gate Orthodontics are adults. As we get older, our teeth and mouths change with the rest of our bodies and it’s not uncommon for people to come in for a second round of braces. We also offer lots of subtle options for adults who want orthodontic treatment without the hassle of traditional metal braces.

Do braces hurt?

Omar Orthodontics | Nov 5, 2019
Omar Orthodontics | Nov 5, 2019

Braces should never hurt. The orthodontist will gradually reposition your teeth at pace that is comfortable for you and allows your muscles to adjust. Protruding wires and brackets can also agitate the mouth, but the orthodontist will give you dental wax to soothe any sharp edges. Though your mouth and gums may be sore from time to time, your braces shouldn’t be agonizing you. Call your dentist immediately if you’re experiencing extreme pain.

How do I know if I need braces?

Omar Orthodontics | Nov 5, 2019
Omar Orthodontics | Nov 5, 2019

Not everyone needs braces, but most people can benefit from them. If you have trouble with regular activities related to the mouth and teeth, like eating, speaking, yawning, etc, we definitely recommend going to the orthodontist for an evaluation. Braces can help correct the alignment of your teeth and jaws and relieve pressure on your mouth that could be causing discomfort or pain.

When should I see the orthodontist?

Omar Orthodontics | Nov 5, 2019
Omar Orthodontics | Nov 5, 2019

If you are unhappy with your smile, see an orthodontist. Patients as young as 7 years old come in for orthodontic evaluations. Don’t compromise your oral health and visit the orthodontist! At East Gate Orthodontics, we care about patients of all ages.

What is orthodontics?

Omar Orthodontics | Nov 5, 2019
Omar Orthodontics | Nov 5, 2019

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that focuses on correcting the position of the teeth and jaws with treatments like braces, headgear, and palatal expanders. An improper bite can lead to problems with basic functions like chewing, speaking, smiling, or simply moving the mouth. Misaligned teeth can place pressure on the wrong facial muscles, causing serious issues if left untreated.
