Imagine taking an hour+ out of your day to donate and you haven't eaten all day so you spend more money on food. Then when you get to the site to donate it takes more time because they don't send you the "rapid pass" via email. To top it off you have a needle shoved into your arm without the site being covered and blood shoots out. Then instead of donating you have two separate people take turns digging into your arm with a needle while telling you you're being a good sport. Only to be sent home and the half a bag I filled while enduring the madness is completely useless. 8 weeks more like 8 months. Keep the T shirt, this is why it took me so long to want to donate again. Use a shovel next time and stop calling me.

I frequent the American Red Cross as a platelet donor and have only good things to say about this location. Personally I have never waited more than 10 minutes in the waiting room, and I have not observed them get far behind on their appointments. They have always been able to poke my veins just fine, and the staff is superb at their job. It is a very good atmosphere as well. I would recommend those considering a donation who are healthy and able to give it a shot!

I donated whole blood about a week ago after a hiatus of several years and it was a great experience. Virus protocols are a hassle but they have no choice. The woman who took my blood pressure and hematicrit was sullen, but everyone else was friendly and helpful. They still have snacks and drinks when you're done. It's the easiest good deed you can do.

The American Red Cross is a donation organization and do not pay for donations.

Yes, the results are viewable in your online portal a few days after donation
No, there are quite a few places to donate plasma (CSL, Biomat, BioLife) that pay. Donating blood, platelets etc. is all, well, a donation. You're still saving lives and you get a free cookie or snack afterwards
Additional donation takes about 35min. Give your self at least an hour and drink plenty of water.
Yes
They take double the red blood cells but put plasma back in you. It takes about 2 hours.
