The reason why this woman is not a fan of tourists is because they routinely steal her books. If you're considerate and authentic, you're fine coming here.

Fantastic collection of books that are difficult to find anywhere else, and Margaret is a fascinating person to talk with. Very reasonable membership fee.

I want to give this library a four for wonderful, interesting books but I'm going with a two for personal interaction. The lady we talked to seemed to genuinely not want us there because she thought we were tourists, though my friend lives in Ballard and I visit and stay frequently, and so I wanted to see what kind of resources were near by. We heard her talking about us to other visitors as we left, saying essentially she doesn't know what to do when "people like them" come in, even though we offered to leave when she seemed uncomfortable that we'd even come in, that we wanted to be respectful, and she said it was fine if we stayed. I honestly have come to expect greater hospitality from libraries and shops of this type and was really surprised and put off, so regardless of how close it is to where I stay when I visit and regardless of how lovely the books are, I'll go out of my way to go somewhere that doesn't make me feel like an intruder simply for patronizing the place.
