*UPDATE* Dr. Kafali personally followed up with me following my review to thank me for my feedback and to apologize for my experience. In her follow up she offered more information about the options I would have if my BRCA gene test came back positive and the kind of questions she recommends asking my insurance. I appreciate her effort to resolve the conflict and her offer to answer any follow up questions I had. I truly dislike leaving bad reviews and I am nervous to post this after seeing that Dr. Kafali (or someone on her team) respond to negative reviews with details about an individual in an attempt to prove us wrong or dismiss our experience. But I hope this review is taken as constructive criticism, and not as an attack. I scheduled to see Dr. Kafali for an annual check up but primarily with the intention to talk about testing for the BRCA gene and preventative measures I can take as an individual with a family history of very aggressive metastatic breast cancer. I researched various gynecologists in network and was drawn by descriptions of her care that referenced her emphasis on “creating forward viewing plans for the future that best suit each person and their needs.” Unfortunately my experience did not reflect this description of care. The appointment felt rushed and Dr. Kafali would consistently speak over me in a condescending tone, making me feel intimidated to continue the conversation or ask my questions. I shared with her that gene testing has been recommended by doctors before but that no one has taken the time to explain the process, the benefits, and the potential drawbacks (such as potential discrimination from insurance companies if I were to test positive, something I had been told in passing by a nurse at a different facility and wanted to confirm if it's true). She asked why this was even a concern, but to me that’s an extremely valid concern. How can I ensure my access to the care I'll need in the future if I will potentially be jeopardizing my eligibility for certain types of insurance if I were to test positive? Plus, a patient’s concerns should always be addressed by the doctor, even if it seems stupid to them. I became very frustrated that she continued to speak over me, and as much as I wanted to hold back my tears, I began to cry. I was visibly distressed and could hardly get my words out, so I know Dr. Kafali could tell how upset I was. Yet she did not care to address what was making me upset and whether I was still comfortable with moving forward with a physical exam in this emotional state. I did not feel cared for, welcomed, or comfortable enough to talk about my health. I recognize doctors are busy, but you all are still working with human beings who deserve the proper time and attention, even if you're running 45 minutes behind, which was my case as well. Again, I hope this review is taken as feedback to improve your care for future patients. Thank you.
