Robin, thank you for your message. I forwarded your message to the Great Cycle Challenge team and they'll reach out to you to answer your question. Thank you for supporting Children's Cancer Research Fund through your participation in Great Cycle Challenge.
Thank you for your interest in Children’s Cancer Research Fund. Some of the cancer research conducted by scientists does involve mice. The FDA requires that any new drug or treatment protocol be tested in animals before it can move to clinical trials with humans. The institutions where we fund research are committed to ensuring that research involving animals not only complies with all ethical, legal and safety regulations, but that it also conducted in a compassionate and humane manner. At the University of Minnesota, one of the research institutions we fund, there is a partnership between cancer researchers and the veterinarian school. For example, dogs develop many of the same types of cancers as humans. Researchers are treating pet dogs with cancer, and their research helps enhance understanding of cancer genetics – benefiting dogs with cancer, as well as getting new treatments to humans more quickly.
