Eternally grateful for the doorways. Thank you to all staff and volunteers that made such a dramatic time in my life (heart transplant) much easier to deal with Your kindness means to world to me! If you have the opportunity to donate, this is the place!

This place is amazing and I'm glad it's an available option for low income families

No only 15 minutes just long enough to get checked in. Parking is available at the hospital and the doorways will give you a pass so it's free.
Hi Renee, Yes, children can stay with us! And just to clarify, the child does not need to be a patient at VCU to stay here. :) Please feel free to give us a call with any questions you may have! Our main line is 804-828-6901. Thank you!! Regan
OK. The previous answers show the first blush published shuttle "schedule". However, I needed to get the patient to MCV before the schedule says the shuttle would be running. The staff member at the front desk told me today (February 19th, 2019), when I was checking in at The Doorways, no problem! The shuttle is available on call 100% of the time outside of scheduled hours. The number to call is listed on the brochure right beneath the list of scheduled runs. They only need 30 minutes notice before when you need to arrive. You are not stranded at night! The same applies to return to The Doorways "after hours."
You can check in anytime up until 11pm. If going to be after 11 You must call Good luck Ann Momper
There is always food to prepare for your self there. It is kept in The freezer and pantry. You have to cook it your self and if too much cook all and offer some to the others staying there. your family is also welcome to stay with you while you are there. You never have to be there alone, never
No one is turned away because of ability to pay. Only if it is full
Plenty of places within walking distances. Secret Sandwich Society, Subway, Restaurant at Marriott, Poute De Soup, Tenka Ramen, Soul Taco, Salt and Forge are all under .5 mile from here. I was a liver transplant patient with neuropathy and I could make it. But of course it depends on how bad your health is. All of these are unfortunately closer than any convenience store. They also provide a list of all these when you arrive.
Hi Carol. As the others have correctly stated, our suggested donation is $15 per person per night. So in your case the total suggested donation would be $30. However, if you are unable to make that donation we never turn anyone away. The Doorways
Hi Martina, You stated in your other question that you are having a stem cell transplant. Rooms for those patients have both a refrigerator and a microwave. You also have access to a kitchen on our 8th floor that is dedicated to stem cell patients and their families. Please reach out to our front desk and we can answer any other questions or concerns that you might have. The Doorways
Hi Martina, Only those people on your referral are able to go throughout the building and stay in your room. However, you are able to meet with your visitors on the first floor and use any of our common spaces. These include the dining room, TV lounge, lobby, and visitors' lounge. Please ask the front desk if you have any other questions. The Doorways
Hi Candace. If possible, we like for guests to check out by noon. However, if you are unable to do that, just please let the front desk know what time you do plan on checking out. This allows us to plan for the next families that will be staying with us. Thanks, The Doorways
VCU gives you the number, if you are indigent and need a place to stay, if you are a patient visiting the hospital.
