If you want peace and quiet this is the place for you. I've found the best time to go is for sunrise or sunset. But really, anytime is good. Take lots of water no matter the time of year.

Nice short hike if you have small kids. Some picnic tables would have been nice. Mid may to June and late fall are probably the best times to go when everything is growing and there are more birds.

Excellent! Perea Nature Trail is good exercise, nature education and FREE. 25 species of vegetation are identified with informative notices/signs directly in front of the plant. The brochure, available free on site in kiosk, points out and explains local geology This trail belongs to all the people and is well cared for by the BLM.

Perea Nature Trail is a real cute ~1 mile long well-marked walkway that meanders along highway 550 and along Salado Rio just outside of the Zia (where the NM state emblem came from) & Jemez Pueblos & Mountains. It's a beautiful stop (even though I'm 20 minutes away) I'll be back to just to chill in such a beautiful surrounding.

The following is an except taken from this webpage. There's much more detail within the page: https://geoinfo.nmt.edu/tour/landmarks/san_ysidro/home.html Regional Geologic Setting The San Ysidro area lies near the intersection of four significant geologic features, including the mildly deformed Colorado Plateau to the west, the Laramide-age (75 to 55 million years old; Pazzaglia and Kelley, 1998) Sierra Nacimiento uplift to the north, and the late Oligocene to Miocene Rio Grande rift to east. The northeast-trending Jemez lineament, characterized by young volcanism, cuts across all three geologic provinces. The <15 million year old Jemez volcanic field is visible to the northeast, the 2 to 3 million year old Puerco Necks, including Cabezon Peak, are located just to the west, and the 1.5 to 3.3 million year old Mount Taylor volcano can be seen on the skyline to the west.
