The main thing changing is that, starting July 2nd, drivers in Michigan will now be able to choose their level of PIP (Personal Injury Protection) coverage. PIP is the medical coverage on your auto insurance. Previously, all auto insurance policies in Michigan had unlimited medical coverage as the only option. Going forward, drivers will be able to pick their medical coverage. They can either keep unlimited, take a decreased level of coverage like $500,000 or $250,000 or $50,000, or even opt out completely of having this coverage on their auto insurance policy. In Michigan, where we are a no fault state, there are different levels of collision coverage available: limited, standard, and broad. The level of coverage determines how much you have to pay out of pocket to fix your vehicle if it is involved in a collision with another vehicle. Broad form collision means you only pay your deductible if you are at fault for an accident; if you are not at fault, your deductible is waived. Standard collision means you pay your deductible whether or not you are at fault. Limited collision and your deductible only apply if you are not at fault in a collision loss; if you are at fault, there is no coverage. The price difference between these types of coverage is often small, but the out of pocket difference can be very big.
