Lone Elk Park is a great free place to drive through. You can walk the trails, stop at any of the picnic sites or just drive thru. Love coming here. It was a good day to see the velk, buffalo and some deer.

Lovely trail! Safe for small kids, pets and elderly! Enjoyed the fall colours so much

Without a doubt, this is the best place to hike within the St. Louis area. Great trails and beautiful views!! Fall colors are really starting to show but haven't hit their peak yet.

donβt swim there! my good friends have drowned there. the current is too strong even for the strongest swimmers
Castlewood has five moderate trails. They range from 1.7 to 4.7 miles. The lone Wolf being the shortest trail at 1.7 miles is probably the most scenic that the park has to offer. You'll get some nice views as you're walking along the cliff edge. There is a program that you can install on your smartphone called alltrails. Not only will this give you trails that are in your immediate area it will give you maps with GPS, distances, directions, photos and reviews among other benefits. This is an awesome program you can use anywhere to keep you on the trails at any time. I highly recommended it. I hope this was helpful to you and enjoy your ventures. Happy trails. Depending on what direction your travels take you you may want to check out the Ulysses Grant historical site and the Daniel Boone historical site. These two sites are an excellent addition to any day trip.
Yep! They can even do a float trip with ya!
It's closed because they don't want a lot of people in the park. It's been closed since COVID-19 and I have heard they don't plan on opening it again.
Up to you. A jacket or umbrella is fine.
The picnicking facilities are wheelchair accessible The main hiking trail loop is not paved, have long steep climbs, stairs and would be impassable for nearly all wheelchairs. The portion of the loop along the riverside might be doable with a all terrain chair when things are dry but it becomes a slippery, muddy mess with a flooding potential when it rains. I have been there when it became a serious challenge for experienced hikers because of a weather change.
Their are no off road vehicle trails
There is no boat ramp but there is typically access to the river from a sand/gravel "beach" located at the south east edge of the park. Unfortunately this area is generally restricted during high waters such as recently. This is a famously deadly portion of the Meremac River so proceed with extreme caution.
Yes when the water is not too high but it can be kind of dangerous with the undertoe
No this is only a day park
There's more than 26 miles of trails for hiking, biking and equestrian use. Chubb Trail is the longest at 6.5 miles but there are 8 trails total.
Yes there is a trail that runs along the railroad tracks and is in the bluff on the bottom
Beautiful, want to go back & take some good pictures of the deer & bison
I don't believe that campfires are allowed However there are grills
No the park close around sunset and is patrolled. Violators are ticketed
Yes your are legally allowed to swim. However, it is very dangerous be careful of undertoe currents that drag you into the unfathomable amount of debris. Another important note, don't touch the river bed near the middle, quick sand like substance that causes most drownings (other than being drunk).
I'm not sure if they ate allowed but i definitely saw a couple last time i was there.
Yes, free entry and parking. Only crowded on weekends in the summer. Go in the fall; you'll have the place to yourself and the view is spectacular.
Well I have never personally participated in fishing at Castlewood, the Missouri state parks website says there are plenty of places to do so.
