I van camped at the Harry L Swartz Campground for one night. There are many trails to take but I only had time for a single hike, so I took the “South Loop Trail” which wound through Prairie and then along the Middle Fork River. The toilet/showers are also used as a bathhouse for people spending time swimming at the campground lake, which had been drained during my stay. The bathhouse is very nice and clean with plenty of warm water. This campground is nicely laid out for RVs and campers alike. The campsites are large, flat and with enough privacy. The long road into the site is pretty, with multiple lakes and picnic areas.

The park itself being a dark sky preserve is all the stars. The normal bathroom was great but the pit toilet was one of the worst I've seen at a campground. This place is great for RV campers but I'm a tent camper and all the sites are paved with gravel on them. The only places that work for a tent are the primitive sites and group sites. Would recommend booking sites far from bathrooms and water fountains because they have lights on them and it's incredibly bright for being a dark sky area

Nice campsite Saw a ton of stars at night, but there were quite a few people that don't turn off their lights. There's also firewood for sale Thurs-Mon. And I saw an active eagle's nest!

Good Morning - the main portion of the preserve does close at 9pm. Therefore, if you are not camping we suggest that you go to the North Waterfowl Mgt. Area. There is a small parking lot that is open 24/7 and you can view the sky from there. CCFPD does not provide telescopes or any amenities. You can kayak, however, the ponds are not very big. Keep in mind, you would need to bring your own as there aren't any for rent.
The closest town of size is approx. 12 miles from Middle Fork River Forest Preserve. At this time, we do not feel it will alter your view of the night sky.
The main user areas of the preserve close at dusk. For dark sky viewing, please use our viewing area located at the North Waterfowl viewing platform. Address is: 2554 County Road 3500 N. Penfield Il 61862. This area is open 24/7.

Ya,I'm not for sure when and if anyone is gonna be able to swim in that part of middle fork but we swam in a different part of the whole place
