I have been a patient of Dr. Foster’s for at least ten years. So have my husband and my son. We started coming so see Dr. Foster because of my husband’s father, who initially came to see him because he had glaucoma. Dr. Foster took the time to sit with my husband’s father until the pressure in his eyes returned to normal during one particularly troubling episode. My husband’s father was a retired Air-Force sergeant and did not trust medical professionals, but he did trust Dr. Foster. So, when the school sent home a notice advising that our son needed to see an eye doctor, we took him to see Dr. Foster. Furthermore, when the state sent me to Gaston Eye Associates for a disability exam, I requested that I be assigned to Dr. Foster as a patient. I stopped going to see eye doctors for a while, thinking that there was really no use; but Dr. Foster encouraged me during every visit to try new things, describing new technologies that he read about. I took his advice, found a couple of helpful tools, and was able to earn my master’s degree in social work. I don’t have to depend upon disability benefits anymore. He also made the connection between my eye condition and my son’s eye condition, which was, and continues to be, very helpful for our family. I received a text message recently advising that it is time for my regular eye exam. I called on Thursday 10/20/2022 to make the appointment and Susie (?) answered. This is a voice I recognized. She took my primary insurance information, which is new insurance, as my husband’s employer changed insurance providers this year. I do not know the name of the vision provider, just the healthcare provider. My husband had an appointment at your agency last week. He did not have the name of the vision coverage provider at that time either. We asked his HR person, but she was either too busy or did not care to find out for him. He said that they found it for him at the desk at Gaston Eye Associates when he got there. Therefore, I did not think it was a problem for me to call to make the appointment without the name of the vision care provider. I was incorrect about it not being a problem, because Susie (?) was very upset about this. She advised me to hang up and find out what the name of the provider is and call back and then she would make my appointment. I told her that I can’t do that because I don’t know how to find out the name of the vision care provider. I told her that my husband came in last week with the same provider and what did they do then? She would not let me finish. She said she was “confused” because I should know who my provider is. I asked her if I should just go somewhere else. She asked me why I can’t just hang up the phone, ask my husband to ask his employer what the name of the provider is, and then call her back. I told her that we did that when he came for his appointment the previous week, and that his employer did not know the name of the provider. She said that this means that I don’t have vision coverage. At that point I told her to have a good day and I hung up the phone. It’s very difficult to come to the doctor to hear that your vision is deteriorating. I cannot come to a place where I am disrespected in the process.
