Dr. Dana Sprute is the family doctor for my daughter and I. Our experience with her began several years ago when my daughter was misdiagnosed by two doctors as having the flu. She stayed out of school for over two weeks, taking prescribed Tamiflu and another perscription medicine - yet her fever continued to climb to 105. She became delirious and could not lift her head off the pillow. In panic and desperation, I sought another opinion from Dr. Sprute at Blackstock Community Clinic. Dr. Sprute asked me a couple of what I considered to be unusual questions. Afterwards, she gave her diagnosis: "I think she's got Typhus." I freaked out - Why TYPHUS?!" She said a memo had come across her desk notifying Travis County doctors to be on the lookout because a few cases had been reported in the area. She told me my daughter had the exact symptoms and to immediately take her to Dell Children's Hospital and insist on a Typhus test. After her test in the Dell Emergency Room, my daughter received the correct medicine and began coming back to life. All of our care since then from Dr. Sprute has been of the highest caliber. She seems to keep tabs not just on what's in front of her - but on what's going on in the community. That's what I want in a doctor.

I chose Sprute because she was close by and I came in once for a physical. She spent several minutes explaining how their practice worked which was fine until I realized she was only going to spend about 8 minutes total with me. I left my job blank which she outwardly seemed offended by. I had several questions and wanted her to review some old x-rays to which she replied "times up" and just left. Before that she asked me if I needed a refill on a prescription and I told her yes I think so and she said she'd come back and fill it but never did. After days of calling after the first apt trying to get her to refill it she flat out refused claiming the reason was because I needed to get a test done first, which doesn't make any sense since she had prescribed me to get the test done BEFORE she offered me the refill. If it really was a concern she would have mentioned it at the time, not days later. So either she's an inept doctor and only figured out the risk later or she's flat out refusing me the scrip because she has personal beliefs against it. I will never go back to this doctor. I was treated disrespectfuly and obviously she let her personal feelings effect her treatment of me and now I have to go find a new doctor to get the scrip refilled.

What are the symptoms of RSV?

Respiratory Syncytial Virus, or RSV, may appear like a bad cold to adults. For infants or young children, RSV can cause bronchiolitis -- a virus which causes swelling and an increase in mucus in the airway. This can cause difficulty breathing through their nose and eventually dehydration due to difficulty latching to the breast or bottle for infants. Other symptoms of RSV may include a fever or a very wet sounding cough, which can turn into coughing fits. Those coughing fits can cause a child to gag and potentially vomit.

Contact your child’s doctor, who can test for RSV and provide recommendations to keep your child safe at home.
