In this era of identity theft, perhaps they are being cautious about someone just calling and saying they are a property owners son. Sadly, because of privacy concerns, you may have to prove by power of attorney or some other legal means who you are and the reason for your inquiry. There are far too many scams (especially against the elderly) and protecting the privacy of their residents is their job. A phone call from an unverifiable caller is not sufficient to release a residents private information.
