You may be thinking of plasma centers. They pay people for their plasma, which is used to manufacture retail products such as pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. They do not pay it's donation like red Cross for emergencies and disasters. You can earn points for prizes like restaurant vouchers and free movie passes.

Walk-ins are welcomed @ Phoenix Blood Center; 5757 N Black Canyon Hwy but I prefer scheduling online so I can complete the questionnaires on day of donation which saves 15 minutes.

Good morning. We do charge hospitals for our services of collecting, testing, processing and delivering the blood donated to us. Our fees are calculated to just cover the costs of the above.
